Musa Nabi’s AS staff was a hujjat (argument) that separated haqq from batil, while Isa Nabi AS cured the ill. Using the letters in the names of the two anbiya, Maula TUS depicted the distinct abilities each possessed and the qualities necessary for success in the two corresponding professions: law and medicine. Lawyers grant shifaa to one’s mind while doctors give shifaa to one’s body. This is the manner in which these two professions are connected.
Nabi Ullah Musa AS (Lawyers)
م
Lawyers use logic in making their case. The م (meem) in موسى stands for منطق or logic. Musa Nabi’s staff, asaa, was a logical argument for the magicians who challenged him. Conversely, arguments without basis are considered sophistry: they are misleading arguments used to persuade others rather than convey truth. Awliya Allah AS use logic to show their followers the right path. Maula TUS used logic to show mumineen why bukaa and matam is wajib. When Maulana Adam AS was expelled from jannat because of his sins, he cried and beseeched Allah Ta’ala with the wasila of Panjatan Paak for forgiveness; only then was he allowed back into jannat. The children of Adam must do the same to be absolved of their sins.
و
The Arabic letter و in موسى stands for wazeer (Vizier). Amirul Mumineen AS states:
The best vizier of faith is knowledge; and the best vizier of knowledge is forbearance; and the best vizier of forbearance is rifq; and the best vizier of rifq is leen.
Intending to challenge Imam Mohammad al Baqir AS, Abu Hanifa asked the Imam AS why he used a walking stick at his age. Imam AS responded by saying that the stick belonged to Rasulullah SAW and he was carrying it for barakat. Abu Hanifa persisted by declaring that if he was certain that it was in fact Rasulallah’s SAW walking stick, he would be inclined to kiss it for respect. Imam AS delivered a crushing reply, lifted his sleeve to reveal his skin and said that even if you do not believe that this is Rasulallah’s SAW walking stick, there is no doubt that this flesh is that of Rasulallah SAW. The argument was haqq (factual) because Imam Jafar us Sadiq AS was, in fact, the successor of Rasulallah Saw. Doing hujjat against Abu Hanifa was necessary because Abu Hanifa had a large following; yet, Imam AS only needed a few stern remarks to refute Abu Hanifa’s arguments.
س
The letter س in Nabi Musa’s name represents sehre halal (halal magic). Rasulallah SAW states:
Indeed, some eloquent speech is like magic!
Sehre halal, as opposed to sehr, is speech that serves to distinguish truth from falsehood. A man approached Imam Jafar us Sadiq AS and asked if there was khair (good) and shar (bad) in the world. The man was puzzled when the Imam AS responded by saying that there is only khair in the world. The man argued, giving the Imam AS the example of worms infesting wheat, suggesting that the infested worms must be considered shar. Imam AS used sehre halal to change the man’s thinking. Imam AS explained that if wheat was immune to worms, emperors would hoard the crop to drive up prices, which would cause immense hardship to the people. In this sense, the worms could not be considered shar.
ى
Finally, the ya maqsura in موسى denotes that lawyers must have good akhlaaq (character). This alone can be the reason for victory against an opposing party. Syedna Dawood Bin Qutubshah’s RA akhlaaq and noor left the Mughal Emperor Akbar awestruck. Syedna’s akhlaaq alone made Akbar favorable towards Syedna Dawood RA.
Imam Husain’s AS Hujjat
Imam Husain AS addressed the enemy and did hujjat on them in Karbala. The most decisive of all his hujjat was that if one were to take a lantern and search every corner of the earth, one would not find a grandson of Rasulallah SAW, other than the Imam AS himself. His sehre halal was such that Hur AS, who was a commander in the army of the enemy, bowed in repentance before Imam Husain AS, asking for forgiveness, such that Imam Husain rewrote Hur’s destiny.
Nabi Isa AS (Doctors)
ع
The ع in Nabi Isa’s AS name stands for عبد. Doctors should treat their patients with the belief they themselves are merely instruments while it is Allah who grants shifaa. This ideology features the akhlaaq of tawado (humility). The inverse of humility — takabbur (arrogance) — creates distance between a person and Awliya Allah AS; this distance is the most severe disease one can be inflicted by. The arrogance of Suleyman distanced him from the Dai RA and caused him to be diseased in mind and body.
ي
The ي in Nabi Isa’s AS name represents يقظة (alertness). Doctors need to be vigilant when providing treatment by using the best and newest technologies and remedies available. Awliya Allah are the doctors of our souls and are always cognizant of the turnings of the age and are aware of what remedy is necessary for their time. Every successive Nabi had to slightly alter their remedies in response to changing times, and finally Rasulallah SAW implemented his shariah which was the most perfect of all shariah, a remedy that would remain effective until the end of time.
س
The س in Nabi Isa’s name stands for سعي which means effort. Doctors must put in their utmost effort to cure their patients, and patients must do their part by listening to their doctor’s prescription exactly: failing to do so can lead to reverse effects. Rasulallah SAW brought roza as a cure for muslimeen. When traveling, Rasulallah SAW broke his fast and told his followers to do the same. A group of people, later named ‘Usaat’ did not listen to Rasulallah SAW; what was once meant to remedy them ended up causing them harm because of their failure to listen to Rasulallah SAW. It is upon us to accept the remedy our Tabib e Ruhani, Syedna Aali Qadr Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS prescribes for us: to leave behind all worldly matters to attend Ashara Mubaraka.
ا
Doctors should be able to keep a patient’s medical issues a secret. Secrets in Arabic are known as اسرار (asraar). Asraar represents the last letter in Isa Nabi’s AS name. Similarly, someone suffering from an illness should not openly display their illness to those it does not concern. It is said that concealing one’s illness is among a man’s treasures.
The qualities of Ubudiyat, Yaqaza, Saaye, and Asraar are apparent in the zikr of Husain Imam’s Shahadat.
In manifestation of his عبودية (Ubudiyat) for Allah Ta’ala, Imam Husain AS prostrated on the khaak of Karbala, and this khaak continues to grant us shifaa. Aware of what will happen to his Ahl Bayt after his shahadat, when Imam Husain AS prayed his final salaam upon them, he counseled them to wear double-double clothing. At the point of extreme weakness and exhaustion, covered completely in wounds, Imam Husain AS exerted himself to perform sajda on the scorching sands of Karbala to pray for the salvation of the faithful. Shimr LA with his khanjar on Imam Husain’s AS gibri (nape), severed his sacred head from his blessed body — and therein lie asraar untold.
